Nothing like freshly painted parts is there... Looks like the build is going well.

I have my old 302 block and a few heads lying around in the garrage... Sort of tempted to get it going again, though I dont  have a car to put it in.

Re: A "just for fun" budget 302" build...

Well, per say I don't have a car either.

The valve covers did not turn out as pretty as I hoped they would.  They were sandblasted under way to much pressure.  The crinkle finish still did come through though.  When I get long block assembled I'll try to get some better pictures.

Oh, now my garage is starting to stink like paint!

Well i got the factory exhaust manifolds painted.  Not an easy feat, considering how twisty these header type manifolds are.  It would probably come out easier to powder coat them.

Did you paint the valley or did you get it ceramic coated?

The lifter valley is just primered.  Up towards the dizzy on the passenger side of the block, i need to touch it up.

I'm gonna start eating lunch meat sandwhiches and drinking discount beer, my goal is in a month to buy this cam, and these heads.

Well, I"m getting there with more progress, sorta...

I got my camshaft today.  I bought a Summit brand camshaft.  .521"/.544" lift with 1.6 rockers and 292/302 advertised duration.  Duration at .05" is 234/244.

Re: A "just for fun" budget 302" build...

Well, I made it back home to Illinois today.  I loaded up alot of the car parts that I have collected over the past couple years, the ones that were worth interest.  Part of the booty involved my dad's offy intake, from his mini rod.  He had a twin turbo'd 289 on it and used this intake in along with a upper intake he built.  I'm thinking of using it and going dual quad.

I also brought back a dual point distributor, it needs rebuilt badly, but I'm thinking of going for it.  BTW you guys know all this will clean up.

Not worried that the dual quads may be a bit too much carb for the motor?

Not really, I was thinking of using two 390 CFM 4160s.

Re: A "just for fun" budget 302" build...

Well, I got more parts ordered!  I bought a gear drive from Speedway Motors.  BTW, I'm very pleased with the customer service as of right now.  The gear drive ran $100.  This is Speedways picture of it and its link.

    http://www.speedwaymotors.com/pl/1213,429_Ford-Gear-Drives.html

I also ordered a set of high lift Chevy springs and retainers.  These springs have a 1.25 diameter, a 1.80 installed height, coil bind at 1.107, 125 lbs. at the seat and 365 lbs open.  These springs have the potential to handle .600 lift.  I don't know if the installed height on my 351w heads is 1.7 or 1.82, but I'm hoping 1.82.  If so I should be able to use the springs on the 351w heads.  Then I'll just have to worry about guide clearance.  I may even consider using 351c/351c/400/429/460 rocker arms on this motor.  That will put my gross lift at .562/.588

Well, I stopped by O'Reilly Auto Parts again and now I have a new set of valve guides on order.  Should be here in 3-5 days.

My package from speedway came in, and I'm very pleased.  I do wonder as i don't have the brass washer to go behind my camshaft timing gear, but I'll give speedway a call tommorow.  They also threw in this nifty dirt track magazine.
