Is this engine a good one?

I recently recieved another 351w and found the ID code to start with D9AE. With research i found this to be a 1975 to 1983 motor. I was just wondering if this is a good block at least in order to build it up and make it a performer?

Re: Is this engine a good one?

The D9 part of the engineering number prefix actually stands for 79'.   These engines are good, but I've heard that some parts of quality control are not up to snuff.  The heads are not good for performance either.

BTW if you do some more digging and find a date code, I can get the day that the block was made for you.

Re: Is this engine a good one?

Thanks for the info, so all in all, if i put the money and parts into it (which i will) this engine will come out to be a street brawler???? Because i was hoping it could be a stree/strip motor.    Also, so it would probly be a good idea to buy new heads?

Re: Is this engine a good one?

It can definitely be a great street motor.  I'd recommend either a set of World "windsor jr." heads or a set of 69' 351w heads.  You'll want an aggressive but still street-able flat tappet camshaft.  A good set of headers and an aluminum intake manifold.  The pistons inside the engine are probably dished and a set of "hyper" flat tops would probably be a wise choice too.

Re: Is this engine a good one?

Good, that took some weight off my shoulders. Now my pockets right now arent deep enough for world heads but if you already have a connection for some 69 heads i would greatly appreciate it. I was going to keep everything hydraulic and was going to go with a lunati voodoo cam and lifter set. It's power is from idle to 5500rpm which sounds really good to me. But right now i think my edelbrock performer intake is good enough to handle my holley double pumper. But if you have any more info i would greatly appreciate it!!!

Check ebay for the heads, usually they are affordable there.

Re: Is this engine a good one?

:) go with some 2v 351 Cleveland heads! BOSS 302's rip the girls cloths off! (this would actually be called a Clevor 302). thats if you have some money for a custom intake manifold and mods to the heads, and drill out some holes in the block.

Re: Is this engine a good one?

    A 79 351w has 69cc 302 heads on it prolly d8oe or d9oe same as 302w heads

also same heads bolts as 302 if you get 69-70 351 heads bolt holes are larger

you can buy washer kits from edelbrock not expensive. heads are a good move.

And if ya wanna use clevlend heads dont use 351c 2v because they are open chamber.

Use australian 302c heads same valves same ports but closed chamber for insane compression as any good boss engine would have

Re: Is this engine a good one?

if i was going to use any head it would be from a 302 68 to 70 year model the valves are 190 intake 160 exhaust ,351 valves are 185 intake 155 exhaust , with the same size intake and exhaust runners.flatheadV8

Re: Is this engine a good one?

    The 68-72 NEVER used a 1.90" 1.6" valve combination.
