    351w to Boss 302

I heard that the boss 302 was basically a 351 windsor with cleveland heads put on it. I know the bolt pattern is the same, and the heads bolt sizes are different but with a little machining is it possible to do this? Also I'm looking for a good manuel trany to put on my 351w, any advice?

    Re: 351w to Boss 302

    No, thats very wrong!

The 302 boss was a 4 bolt main 302 "windsor" block.  The block came from the "trans am" racing period.  Instead of the tunnel port heads, "cleveland" styled 4v heads were installed.  These heads had slightly smaller chambers than the 351 cleveland and featured coolant passages on the intake side of the head.  The Cleveland head featured HUGE canted valves, semi hemishperical chambers, and insanely large ports.  The 302 Boss also used domed pistons and rods from the 289".  A solid lifter camshaft was installed also.

The 302 uses 7/16" head bolts, and the 351w uses 1/2"headbolts.  I believe the 302 boss, 351c, 351m, and 400 all use 7/16" headbolts.  The 289, 302, 351w, 351c, 351m, and 400 all use the same headbolt pattern and heads can be exchanged from engine to engine with a "fair amount" of machine work.

Cleveland style engines do not have any coolant traveling through their intake manifolds.

My recommendation for building a "boss 302" is too purchase either CHI 2v head or "aussie" 2v cleveland heads.  Then have the buy Edelbrocks "e-boss 302" intake manifold.  Use a milling machine to cut the coolant passage in the intake manifold and plug off the old coolant passages in the bottome of the heads.  Put the heads on a 302 block with custom pistons.  351c 4v pistons would have plenty of valve clearance and are only slightly taller than 302 pistons, you may be able to shave the head of the piston and use those.

    Re: 351w to Boss 302

haha wow, I was off by a mile. Thats a too much work for me too do right now. I'm looking to add a bit more horsepower to the engine with some work but nothing as complicated as machining. Is there any performance heads that I would be able to put on that fit the engine?

The 69 351w head is a good head, or check out the aftermarket.

ok cool, thanks. I'm getting the engine looked at this week so I was planning on then possibly having some stuff done.

    Re: 351w to Boss 302

    Hi fellas,
I,m a Journeyman Heavy Equipment Tech in Canada. I have admired Fords since a teenager. Built more than one also. I used to have a template showing the layout of the deck of a Boss block compared to a standardly configured 302 deck. Havent got a hope of finding it as a departed Ford nut and Dealership owner handed it to me one day. If your brains arent tired of being scratched, I could really use some direction. I also intend to use a Windsor block to accomplish this interesting idea. So if someone knows the dimensions to change the manifold to, I am interested. I have also pondered if one could use a Cleveland head gasket to decide the coolant jackets that needed alteration in order to seal the system.
    Thx, talk to ya later.
