    unbalance????????

My son was a desert racer and ran 351 winsors, built his own motors. He had one on the dyno at the time of his untimely death in 2002. Since then I have taken the 351 that was on the dyno and stuck it into my 1957 ford car. Its very clear its out of balance, He used a torque flight trany, My problem is that I bought a flex plate for a c5 and there is no line up pin. I think since there is several ways it can be bolted up and I'm sure it should be bolted up a certain way or does it have to balanced to the motor????? What are my options? Do i need to disasemble and have it all balanced again???? If anyone can help I need it. Thanks very much. The motor runs fair but has a definent unbalance.

    Re: unbalance????????

The 351's are externally balanced. If the front balancer is correct for a 351 then I would say the flywheel would be your demon. I'm not familiar with the C5 flex plate at all but if it has no line-up dowel then it is not gonna be balanced for use with a 351. You might appeal to someone like Trans-Dapt for help, or may be some other maker of adapters as they may have experience with that type of swap.

    Re: unbalance????????

It should only be able to bolt up one way, though it looks like it can go on any way. The bolts are not evenly spaced IIRC (though it has been a little while since I looked).

The 351 should be a 28oz imbalance. Do you know what the imbalance of the flex plate you bought is?

By "torque flight trany" I assume you mean it's a Ford C5 or AOD since that's the flex plate you purchased. C5's were installed in some 4.9 six cylinder trucks and those flex plates would be the same size and shape as the 302/351w but would not have the balance weight attached.

    Mmmmmmmm.....

    Re: unbalance????????

Thanks for the come back, Since iI posted I removed the motor from the car and started the task . I removed the transmission and flex plate and yes the bolt holes are not even, they are off enough so the plate will only bolt up one way....... Thank you very much. Yes  there was a flex plate much different from the c6 not a c5. My son did run sum type of torque flight???? The flex plate I installed has a large weight welded to the outside edge by the starter gear. Well doesn't matter much now. I will disasemble and send it out to be balanced. Its been a real challenge to try to figure what was done to the motor, Now there will be no guessing . I will post a picture and the out come at a later date... Thanks to all who posted....Barry
