    302 - Will this work?

I am wanting to build a budget 302 for a project.  I can get my hands on the following:

complete 5.0 HO from a 89-95 mustang,  1969 351 windsor heads and a offenhauser dual quad intake for a 302

Will this setup work and are they any gotchas I should watch out for?

Re: 302 - Will this work?

what purpose are you building motor for, raceing, street strip or daily driver?

the 351 heads will work but you need stepped head bolts or the special stepped washers for the swap as the 351 used bigger head bolts than the 302.  the dual quad intake wil be a bit much for stareet car but the wow factor will be awesome. use sumthing like 450 cfm carbs . the dual setup is overkill but i do like the looks when ya raise hood.you will get much better performance  from say a rpm air gap and 600 to 650 carb. but its your choice.have fun with whatever you decide to use

Yes 2 4 barrel carbs are a bit much, but maybe you could diconect the secondaries on the carbs. I have never done this but it sounds like it might work. I have heard of it being done tho.

Another option to look for would be a 6 pack manifold. Three dueces at about 200 cfm each would be cool and very doable. One other item to check is that some 4bbl carbs have removeable venturies, thus you might be able to change the cfm on them.

In the "old days" you could actually buy a dual quad setup for your 289 Hi-Po/302HO from your Ford dealer. Those old Cobra intakes are high dollar swap meet items. But remember these were high compression engines with very aggressive cam profiles running on high octane fuel. Unless your project needs the "wow" looks of the dual quad, and that's all you're looking for, I wouldn't suggest going that way. You can get more power from the 5.0 HO with a good intake and a single 600 cfm 4 barrel. IMHO

BUDGET 302 (in my definition) and offenhauser dual quad intake are not compatible terms unless you want a motor that looks great but runs like crap on the street and gets  8 mpg.  If "budget to you means well over 5 grand, then I retract my statement.
