    Marine Engine in a Car?

I found a Marine 351W crate long block motor for cheep.  Would this work in a car?  Would be non emission with a carb.

I know they probably are not the best and use stamped rockers etc.  but I'm just looking for something to tie me over until I can get my high performance motor built.

Check to make sure its been properly cleaned in the water passages etc. Also check to make sure it doesnt have a funky reverse crank rotation or anything like that.

Aside from that its probably not too special one way or another. You will obviously not want the marine exhaust manifolds if you get them

I was thinking that marine motors were set up something like aircraft motors. They really aren't built for very high rpms but more for low end torque.

that is an interesting thought.  I remember in my 21 ft sea ray we ran the cheby 350 up to 3500 RPM max

Have you thought about changing out the short block and having your heads reconditioned?  This would be more work or fun depending on your point of view.

Re: Marine Engine in a Car?

marine motors typically are designed to provide a maximum HP or torque at a prescribed RPM.  In other words, check the cam and see if it has the powerband range you would be looking for.  Also, I agree with other posts, if it's been used and not maintained (like using it in salt water and not flushing it after every use) you may have a hell of a lot of crud in it that Prestone Flush won't remove.

But marine motors are designed to deal with a lot of stuff that regular motors are not.  If maintained properly, they are very good.
