need info on 97 5.0 mountaineer motor

    hi, i just purchased a motor / trans from a 97 mountaineer . its to install into a 74 comet that had a 302 v8.

it will have everything, motor, accessories, harness, ecu, transmission.  i pretty much have free reign on what parts i need.

anyhow, what kind of injection is this? maf mas, tps .  its distributerless and has 2 4pak coils on the front of the engine.

is the transmission controlled by the ecu or is there another computer i have to look for for the tranny 4R70W.

can i put a better cam in this engine before i install it into my 74 comet.

almost all aftermarket parts stop at 96, why is that?

    thanks

Re: need info on 97 5.0 mountaineer motor

If you want to run the engine and trans as a unit, youll need the Explorer computer and harness.  You could run the engine with a conventional distributor and Mustang harness/computer, then run the trans with a seperate stand alone computer for more power and greater tuneablility, but it will be a lot of work for not a lot of gain considering its a stock engine.  The 97 most likely has the P heads on it, so good luck finding an exhaust manifold that will work with the relocated spark plugs.  Theyre not a problem in a fox body Mustang, but about your only option in a Maverick is the stock exhaust manifolds.  I doubt youll get the Explorer FEAD to work as well, since to make it shorter it sticks out on the sides of the engine making it wider than the more conventional Mustang accessories.  If you make the engine work, some will say the stock truck cam is great, more would probably say to swap it with an H.O. cam as it has a touch more duration.  Add a set of good valve springs and a set of 1.7 roller rockers and youll have one of the best stock 5.0s available.  Dont get me wrong, the gt40P motors are great for power, but to get all the Explorer stuff (accessories, trans, etc.) they just dont fit.  My advice if you dont want a lot of work is to just take the long block, swap over all your existing accessories, front dress, etc, and run it with a carb.  If you want overdrive, get a Mustang aod.
