    Advice needed on 289 buildup

Ok, So I've decided to rework the 289 block in my 67 custom 500, so far, it's going fantastic, I just wanted to post here to bounce some ideas off of the more technically inclined of you... here goes.

    289, stock bore and stroke.

    Edelbrock performer 289 manifold

Edelbrock 1406 600 cfm carb, electric choke, one step richer in idle and power (1455 rod, .098 jet)

Lunati 61001 cam, straight up cam timing

Mallory Dual Points distributor, 25 series

    E7TE heads, port matched

Ford Racing 1.7 ratio pedestal mount rockers

TrickFlow Spring and retainer upgrade kit 2500100

Edelbrock 1715 mechanical fuel pump (130gph)

Quick Fuel Regulator set at 6 psi

I think for the most part, this is as far as I can go without building up the bottom end and swapping transmissions, I have the blessing and curse of having the 3 speed column shifted manual trans, rock solid transmission, but because of the shifting mechanism, can't get headers in there, not without buying stubs and bending and welding my own. I thought about ditching the 1.74"/1.45" valves in favor of some 2.02"/1.6", and having the pistons flycut, or just plain replacing them... but I'm not financially cut out for a major overhaul right now, and if I go to that length, It would just become a major overhaul.

So, my question, the advice I'm looking for, does this look like a pretty sound setup for a streetable vehicle with occasional trips to a local track?

The cost of the head job to swap in larger valves would approach getting a set of twisted wedge heads (which would be a lot better,  and lighter).

Your build sounds pretty well matched over all, depending on condition and tune you might see a bit over 200rwhp.

Actually threw the completed beast on the dyno yesterday... The grand total? 243 peak rear wheel horsepower at 5731 rpm, More than I'll need, but it fits her well.

Nice work. What are the specs on that cam? The motor seems to put out quite a decent amt of hp considering the heads. What did you end up doing with the valves?

I actually left the valves alone, and had the heads shaved .006, Pistons did not need flycutting, copper gaskets made the difference there.

On the cam, I decided to step up to the Lunati Voodoo 61002, Specs as follows.

                                   Intake                   Exhaust

    Valve Lift                 .499                       .522

    Duration at .050        219 Degrees           227 degrees

    Lobe seperation 108 degrees

    Exhaust Close  -2.5 degrees atdc

    Exhaust Open 49.5 bbdc

    Intake Close  37.5 abdc

    Intake Open 1.5 btdc

One step higher than the initial, but makes for a nice strong cam throughout my most used range, 1200-3500 rpm

Re: Advice needed on 289 buildup

Ahh that cam & rockers explains it. Its a bit bigger than the TFS Stage 1 Cam & 1.6 rockers I have in my motor with TFS heads which made about 250rwhp. I think also the higher compression in your motor would make a decent amount of improvements.
